Today I started the Digital fluency intensive facilitated by Manaiakalani. My head is truly spinning, not sure if its the head cold I picked up yesterday, or the extensive amount of information I have been exposed to today.
Hearing the history of the program and its origins helped me to understand the Manaiakalani objectives more clearly. The idea of creating an 'authentic' and personal voice for students on a digital platform resonated deeply with me. I want to give my students the confidence to express their individuality in meaningful ways and hopefully this intensive will help me with this.
Today, I learned lots of little tricks to both save time and make things more user friendly for both myself and students. Understanding simple things like, why screenshots can be better than downloading as a jpeg, and useful shortcuts keys to to use our time more effectively was valuable.
I learned an effective and professional looking layout for creating posters and infographs that is going to be very useful for my students to produce their own work. We have been doing lots of google drawings but I think this new doc method could be much user friendly for my students.
Learning how to create and manage profiles under my Chrome account is also going to be useful in separating my personal digital world from my work one. I can now organise things under profiles and easily access them with no fuss.
Overall, it was mostly a great day bar snuffling and sneezing my way through the material.

Here is a fun doc I made with a table and www.remove.bg
Kia ora Caitlin. It's great to read about all the things you learnt that will help you in your teaching. Google Docs is certainly something our students are aware of, but when we see the many ways of using them, it creates a real 'Aha' moment. I look forward to seeing you on Friday and hope you are feeling better.

Kia ora Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteYou have written so many take aways from the day, which is just fantastic. Your reasoning for why we use and do each thing is also spot on. I guess we will see if it is the amount of information or the head cold on Friday! haha!
Well done for creating your poster in google docs. I think everyone was feeling very much the same. I myself did not get enough chores done haha.
Look forward to reading what you pick up from this weeks session, hope you are feeling better.
